A magnitude 2.5 earthquake near Rheinfelden, Freiburg Region, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 6.10 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025, at 11:42 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.5 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Schopfheim (pop. 19,400) located 3 km from the epicenter, Rheinfelden (pop. 32,500) 7 km away, Rheinfelden (Baden) (pop. 32,500) 7 km away, Loerrach (pop. 47,000) 12 km away, and Bad Sackingen (pop. 16,500) 12 km away. In Weil am Rhein (pop. 29,500, 15 km away), Liestal (pop. 12,800, 16 km away), and Basel (pop. 164,500, 20 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
