Significant 5.3 quake hits near Banda Aceh, Kota Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in Indonesia near Banda Aceh, Kota Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Friday, July 4th, 2025, at 12:33 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sabang (pop. 42,100) located 51 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Banda Aceh (pop. 255,000) located 83 km from the epicenter.

Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 43 km northeast of Sabang, Indonesia in the morning

A very shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Sabang, Kota Sabang, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Friday, July 4th, 2025, at 11:40 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sabang (pop. 42,100) located 43 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Banda Aceh (pop. 255,000) located 75 km from the epicenter, and Sigli (pop. 17,500) 96 km away.
