Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 24 Aug 2025

Summary: 7 quakes 5.0+, 48 quakes 4.0+, 170 quakes 3.0+, 350 quakes 2.0+ (575 total)
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake off the Pacific coast of El Salvador and Guatemala occurred yesterday. It was centered about 81 km southwest of Acajutla and 107 km south‑southeast of Puerto San José. While widely felt, no significant damage or injuries have been reported (Associated Press).

In Malaysia, a magnitude 4.0–4.1 tremor was detected in Johor state, shaking residents across multiple districts. No damage was reported, but it serves as a reminder of regional seismic vulnerability (Business Today Malaysia).

Seismic activity in Texas and nearby New Mexico has largely calmed down. Over the past 24 hours, only two quakes above magnitude 2 were recorded: a magnitude 2.1 near Malaga, New Mexico (Aug 24, 02:40 am GMT -6), and a magnitude 2.3 near McKinney Acres, Texas (Aug 23, 01:02  am GMT‑5). Both were minor events with no damage reported.

According to our monitoring system, seismic activity worldwide during the past 24 hours has remained moderately elevated, with scattered minor events and the Central America offshore quake as the most significant event.

Overall, there have been no confirmed casualties or major damage in any region during this period.

This report is being updated every hour.

Background:

Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America’s 2nd-highest volcano.  The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater.  The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano.  The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone.  Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano.  Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian
