Just 22 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Atka, Aleutians West, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Sunday, August 31st, 2025, at 9:19 am local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.4, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Atka (pop. 64) located 60 miles from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
