France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 3.5 quake in France near Royan, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, September 18th, 2025, at 2:34 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mornac-sur-Seudre (pop. 690) located 3 km from the epicenter, Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan (pop. 2,500) 3 km away, Saujon (pop. 5,800) 6 km away, and Royan (pop. 19,000) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rochefort (pop. 29,400) located 27 km from the epicenter, Saintes (pop. 29,500) 28 km away, Cognac (pop. 20,900) 51 km away, and La Rochelle (pop. 76,800) 53 km away.
