Thu, 25 Sep 2025, 13:10 | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in the United States near Berkeley, Alameda County, California, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, at 5:55 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Berkeley (pop. 121,000) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Orinda (pop. 19,300) 4 miles away, Albany (pop. 19,700) 4 miles away, Oakland (pop. 419,300) 4 miles away, Alameda (pop. 78,600) 6 miles away, Richmond (pop. 109,700) 8 miles away, Walnut Creek (pop. 68,900) 10 miles away, San Leandro (pop. 90,700) 10 miles away, and San Francisco (pop. 864,800) 11 miles away.
