A magnitude 3.7 earthquake near Quillota, Provincia de Quillota, Region de Valparaiso, Chile, was reported only 15 minutes ago by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 63. km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Monday, July 21st, 2025, at 12:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) located 13 km from the epicenter, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 13 km away, Limache (pop. 35,900) 23 km away, and Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 33 km away. An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred around noon on Monday, July 21st, 2025, at 12:50 pm local time near Gorontalo, Kota Gorontalo, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 146. km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gorontalo (pop. 198,500) located 70 km from the epicenter, and Luwuk (pop. 47,800) 113 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience
