An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred early evening on Saturday, September 20th, 2025, at 6:27 pm local time near Angra do Heroismo, Angra do Heroísmo Municipality, Azores, Portugal, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2.70 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Barbara (pop. 1,300) located 5 km from the epicenter, Sao Bartolomeu (pop. 2,000) 8 km away, Biscoitos (pop. 1,400) 8 km away, Sao Mateus (pop. 3,800) 10 km away,
