Popocatépetl Volcano Volcanic Ash Advisory: NEW VA EMS OBS to 20000 ft (6100 m)

Background:

Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America’s 2nd-highest volcano.  The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater.  The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano. 
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano.  The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone.  Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano.  Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian

Just 2 minutes ago, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Ridgecrest, Kern County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday, July 13th, 2025, at 5:27 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Olancha (pop. 190) located 8 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lone Pine (pop. 2,000) located 30 miles from the epicenter, Weldon (pop. 2,600) 38 miles away, Wofford Heights (pop. 2,200) 40 miles away, Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000) 42 miles away, Ridgecrest (pop. 28,800) 43 miles away, Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 45 miles away, and Porterville (pop. 56,100) 56 miles away.
