A shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Tobelo, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, at 2:47 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Maba (pop. 12,600) located 54 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tobelo (pop. 34,200) located 79 km from the epicenter, Galela (pop. 8,800) 103 km away, Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 109 km away, and Sofifi (pop. 36,200) 109 km away.
