France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.5 quake in France near Colmar, Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Monday, July 7th, 2025, at 9:52 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Soultzeren (pop. 1,100) located 3 km from the epicenter. In Colmar (pop. 65,400, 22 km away), Saint-Die-des-Vosges (pop. 24,600, 25 km away), Wittenheim (pop. 15,700, 35 km away), Selestat (pop. 18,900, 36 km away), Illzach (pop. 15,500, 40 km away), Mulhouse (pop. 111,400, 41 km away), and Epinal (pop. 39,500, 47 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
