An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred only 8 minutes ago 116 km north of Naze, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Naze, Amami Shi, Kagoshima-ken, Japan, early afternoon on Sunday, July 6th, 2025, at 2:07 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatsugo (pop. 6,000) located 106 km from the epicenter, and Naze (pop. 41,400) 116 km away.
