A magnitude 5.7 earthquake near Punta Cana, Higüey, Provincia de La Altagracia, Dominican Republic, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity in the Dominican Republic. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 194.60 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at 5:23 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Boca de Yuma (pop. 2,000) located 36 km from the epicenter, Punta Cana (pop. 100,000) 42 km away, San Rafael del Yuma (pop. 5,300) 45 km away, Santa Cruz de El Seibo (pop. 23,500) 98 km away, and San Pedro de Macoris (pop. 217,900) 108 km away.
