The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 3.9 quake in Greece near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, at 2:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.9, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Farsa (pop. 220) located 1 km from the epicenter, Faraklata (pop. 1,100) 5 km away, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 5 km away, and Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 6 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been
