An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred in the evening on Monday, August 18th, 2025, at 8:58 pm local time near Dharamsala, Kāngra District, Himachal Pradesh, India, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dharamsala (pop. 19,500) located 6 km from the epicenter, Yol (pop. 11,300) 19 km away, and Kangar (pop. 9,200) 19 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chamba (pop. 21,500) located 43 km from the epicenter, Talwara (pop. 24,800) 57 km away, Hamirpur (pop. 19,300) 62 km away, and Pathankot (pop. 174,300) 69 km away.

At 1110 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 6 miles southwest of Argyle to near Warren. Movement was east at 30 mph. HAZARD…Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE…Radar indicated. IMPACT…Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include… Wiota, South Wayne, Gratiot, and Woodford.
