Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 31 Aug 2025
Summary: 7 quakes 5.0+, 26 quakes 4.0+, 135 quakes 3.0+, 276 quakes 2.0+ (444 total)
Global seismic activity over the past 24 hours has been marked by a significant number of tremors, with several notable quakes registering above a magnitude of 4.0. According to various seismic monitoring agencies, including the USGS and EMSC, over 200 earthquakes were detected worldwide.
The most powerful event recorded was a M5.5 earthquake in the Rat Islands, Aleutian Islands. While the magnitude was significant, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Another widely felt event was a M4.9 quake that jolted New Zealand’s lower North Island late on Saturday night. The earthquake, located near Nelson, was reported by many people as a light to moderate vibration in the area of the epicenter and was felt as far away as Wellington.

Regions that experienced frequent activity include the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka in Russia, the Philippines, Guatemala, and parts of the United States, such as Battle Mountain, Nevada. There were also numerous smaller earthquakes in Europe, particularly in the Balıkesir region bordering Greece and Turkey, and in Puerto Rico.
