A very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Horsham, Victoria, Australia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Douglas (pop. 57) located 7 miles from the epicenter. In Casterton (pop. 1,600, 36 miles away), Horsham (pop. 14,200, 39 miles away), and Hamilton (pop. 9,700, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred only 10 minutes ago 120 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 41. km beneath the epicenter near Severo-Kuril’sk, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, in the afternoon on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, at 4:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.3. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 7.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Severo-Kuril’sk (pop. 2,400) located 120 km from the epicenter, and Ozernovskiy (pop. 2,600) 143 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via
