A very shallow magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported late at night near Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, October 13th, 2025, at 11:39 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chazy (pop. 570) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Champlain (pop. 1,100) 4 miles away, and Rouses Point (pop. 2,200) 7 miles away. In Plattsburgh (pop. 19,800, 16 miles away), Dannemora (pop. 3,600, 19 miles away), Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (pop. 98,000, 28 miles away), Colchester (pop. 17,000, 31 miles away), Saint-Constant (pop. 27,400, 31 miles away), and Burlington (pop. 42,500, 34 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
