The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in El Salvador near Acajutla, Departamento de Sonsonate, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 3:14 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 49. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.9, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8, and The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Acajutla (pop. 22,800) located 39 km from the epicenter, Sonzacate (pop. 15,400) 59 km away, Izalco (pop. 19,200) 63 km away, Chalchuapa (pop. 32,300) 83 km away, Santa Ana (pop. 176,700) 91 km away, Santa Tecla (pop. 124,700) 96 km away, and Antiguo Cuscatlan
