Just 19 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Valparaiso, Provincia de Valparaíso, Region de Valparaiso, Chile. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 5:07 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 48. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Ligua (pop. 24,900) located 26 km from the epicenter, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 43 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 51 km away, Vina del Mar (pop. 294,600) 61 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 63 km away, Quilpue (pop. 130,300) 63 km away, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 64 km away, and San Felipe (pop. 59,300) 79 km away.
