A very shallow magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported early evening near Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, May 5th, 2025, at 6:53 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7.10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 29 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 92 km from the epicenter, Yilan (pop. 94,200) 98 km away, Caotun (pop. 96,800) 121 km away, Nantou (pop. 105,700) 123 km away, Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 124 km away, Daxi (pop. 94,200) 126 km away,

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 8.20 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Monday, May 5th, 2025, at 6:10 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
