A very shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, June 12th, 2025, at 3:53 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mentone (pop. 19) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Loving (pop. 1,400) 27 miles away, and Jal (pop. 2,200) 36 miles away. In Carlsbad (pop. 29,000, 39 miles away), Wink (pop. 1,100, 41 miles away), Kermit (pop. 6,400, 42 miles away), and Pecos (pop. 9,500, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
