A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Reggio Calabria, Province of Reggio Calabria, Calabria, Italy.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 2:26 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Brancaleone (pop. 3,900) located 32 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Siderno (pop. 15,700) located 64 km from the epicenter, Reggio Calabria (pop. 182,500) 69 km away, Palmi (pop. 18,600) 81 km away,

Syracuse (88.5 km SW of epicenter) [Map] / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / 5-10 s : Asleep in a ground floor apartment. I heard a rumbling like distant thunder. There was a sustained rattling of the window shutters. | One user found this interesting.  

Grammichele (125.9 km WSW of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / very short : Light shake was asleep and woke up hearing things shaking for few swconds and the dogs went crazy barking. They were confused.  

Fontane Bianca (101.3 km SW of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) : I woke up with my heart beating and immediately knew it is an earthquake. The whole beach house was shaking like it is swimming away and the sea noise sounded very different to me so I immediately woke up my husband who felt it too and we checked on the kids who were deeply sleeping.
