Papua New Guinea was shaken near Finschhafen, Morobe Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 20 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 196.73 km beneath the epicenter near Finschhafen, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, early evening on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025, at 7:54 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.1, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.7, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
