An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 5 minutes ago 80 km south of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 178. km beneath the epicenter near San Pedro de Atacama, Provincia de El Loa, Region de Antofagasta, Chile, in the evening on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, at 8:10 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 2,000) located 80 km from the epicenter.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.7 quake in Japan near Beppu, Beppu Shi, Oita, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 8:57 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Beppu (pop. 122,600) located 2 km from the epicenter, Hiji (pop. 28,500) 8 km away, Oita (pop. 477,700) 12 km away, Kitsuki (pop. 23,400) 17 km away, and Tsurusaki (pop. 77,000) 19 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include BungoTakada (pop. 23,100) located 29 km from the epicenter, Usuki (pop. 35,000) 34 km away, and Nakatsu (pop. 84,700) 44
