Sunday, Dec 14, 2025 14:37 | 1 hour ago | By: EarthquakeMonitor

Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Japan near Nanao, Nanao Shi, Ishikawa-ken, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Sunday, December 14th, 2025, at 11:26 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 6.90 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Oshima (pop. 18,600) located 14 km from the epicenter, Hakui (pop. 24,500) 23 km away, Hitoto (pop. 16,500) 25 km away, Nanao (pop. 50,300) 29 km away, Kahoku (pop. 34,900) 34 km away, and Himimachi (pop. 54,500) 38 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tsubata (pop. 37,700) located 44 km from the epicenter, Takaoka (pop. 170,100) 48 km
