An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the morning on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025, at 7:05 am local time near Kalamata, Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4.80 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Stoupa (pop. 600) located 8 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Koroni (pop. 1,600) located 19 km from the epicenter, Paralia Vergas (pop. 2,000) 21 km away, Kalamata (pop. 54,100) 25 km away, Petalidi (pop. 2,600) 27 km away, and Messini (pop. 6,800) 29 km away. In Mystras (pop. 4,200, 33 km away), Gytheion

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Fakfak, Provinsi Papua, Indonesia, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 58. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025, at 12:43 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.7, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fakfak (pop. 18,900) located 134 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become
