An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 27 minutes ago 7 miles southeast of Santa Rosa, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 1.4 miles beneath the epicenter near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA, early afternoon on Sunday, December 14th, 2025, at 3:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kenwood (pop. 1000) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 6 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Agua Caliente (pop. 27,100) located 7 miles from
