The Computational Robotics and Mechatronics (CRM) Lab at Texas Tech University is seeking multiple PhD students to join ongoing research in small-scale magnetic soft robots. Our research is currently supported by two active National Science Foundation (NSF) projects:

1. Modular magneto-dynamic mechanism for small-scale soft robots

2. Self-regulating artificial cilia arrays for fluid and particle manipulation

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. (MS preferred; outstanding BS students considered).

• Background in at least one of: electromagnetics, solid mechanics, robotics, machine learning, and engineering design.

• Preferred: experience with computational modeling (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS, ABAQUS) and programming (Python, MATLAB, C++).

• Strong writing and communication skills and demonstrated research potential.

About Dr. Xiaolong Liu:

Just 9 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, at 8:53 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 8.3 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dustin Acres (pop. 650) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Bakersfield (pop. 373,600) 18 miles away, Lamont (pop. 15,100) 19 miles away, Oildale (pop. 32,700) 20 miles away, Shafter (pop. 18,300) 22 miles away, Arvin (pop. 20,900) 23 miles away, and Wasco (pop. 26,300) 29 miles away. In Delano (pop. 52,700, 41 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
