An intermediate magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Ashkasham, Ishkashim District, Badakhshan, Afghanistan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, at 5:27 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 125. km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have

DENVER – This afternoon, FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to help with firefighting costs for the Windy Rock Fire burning in Powell County, Montana, about midway between Missoula and Helena.

FEMA Region 8 Acting Regional Administrator Katherine Fox approved the state’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) after receiving the request this afternoon and determining that the fire threatened such destruction that it would constitute a major disaster.

At the time of the request, the Windy Rock Fire was threatening 179 structures, many of which are primary homes, near the towns of Helmville and Drummond. The fire is also threatening roads and bridges, utilities, businesses, watersheds, irrigation and economic injury. Mandatory evacuations are in place for the surrounding communities. A shelter has been opened in Deer Lodge and a water distribution center is being operated in Drummond.

The fire started on August 14, 2025, later merged with the nearby Devils Mountain Fire, and has burned in excess of 3,641 acres. It is zero percent contained and there are three other large fires burning uncontrolled within the state.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires. These grants do not provide assistance to individual home or business owners and do not cover other infrastructure damage

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Taiwan near Yilan, Yilan County, Taiwan, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, at 9:11 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 98. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yilan (pop. 94,200) located 17 km from the epicenter, Xizhi (pop. 204,600) 45 km away, Keelung (pop. 397,500) 47 km away, Neihu (pop. 271,600) 51 km away, Taipei (pop. 7,871,900) 53 km away, Banqiao (pop. 543,300) 55 km away, Shulin (pop. 180,000) 57 km away, New Taipei City (pop. 4,004,400) 59 km away, Sanxia (pop. 115,200) 59 km away, and Yingge (pop. 87,900) 62 km away.
