An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 9 minutes ago 88 km northeast of Iwaki, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan, after midnight on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, at 12:21 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Minami-Soma (pop. 59,000) located 77 km from the epicenter, Iwaki (pop. 357,300) 88 km away, and Soma (pop. 34,900) 89 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Date (pop. 59,600) located 124 km from the epicenter, Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 124 km away, Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 124 km away, Koriyama (pop. 327,700) 125 km away, and Sukagawa (pop. 75,000) 125 km away.
