An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 8 minutes ago 80 km south of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Ust-Kamenogorsk, East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan, early afternoon on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2025, at 3:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Asubulak (pop. 5,600) located 50 km from the epicenter, and Kokpekty (pop. 5,200) 57 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalbatau (pop. 22,000) located 64 km from the epicenter, Ust-Kamenogorsk (pop. 319,100) 80 km away, Belousovka (pop. 9,900) 97 km away, and Glubokoye (pop. 11,200) 98 km away.
