Moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 225 km depth

Moderate magnitude 4.0 quake hits 45 miles northwest of Atka, Alaska, United States early evening

Just 32 minutes ago, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Atka, Aleutians West, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded early evening on Friday, September 12th, 2025, at 6:30 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 140 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Atka (pop. 64, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
