Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Chimbote, Provincia de Santa, Ancash, Peru. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at 9:51 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 6.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Puerto Santa (pop. 14,100) located 20 km from the epicenter, Coishco (pop. 15,100) 24 km away, and Chimbote (pop. 317,000) 28 km away.
In Viru (pop. 20,800) located 61 km from the epicenter, Moche (pop. 22,600) 90 km away, Trujillo (pop. 919,900) 97 km away, and Laredo (pop. 24,700) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
