El Salvador was shaken near Usulutan, Departamento de Usulutan, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 12 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 95.70 km beneath the epicenter near Usulutan, Departamento de Usulutan, El Salvador, early morning on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, at 5:57 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3, and The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto El Triunfo (pop. 19,100) located 25 km from the epicenter, Usulutan (pop. 51,900) 33 km away, San Rafael Oriente (pop. 19,100) 40 km away, Santiago de Maria (pop. 15,000) 47 km away, Cojutepeque (pop. 48,400) 86 km away, Soyapango (pop. 329,700)
