Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Indonesia near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 9:10 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masamba (pop. 38,000) located 69 km from the epicenter, and Poso (pop. 47,500) 71 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palopo (pop. 190,900) located 119 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. Just 11 minutes ago, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 9:07 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Poso (pop. 47,500) located 68 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masamba (pop. 38,000) located 79 km from the epicenter, and Palopo (pop. 190,900) 127 km away.

Significant magnitude 5.8 quake hits 76 km south of Poso, Indonesia in the evening Indonesia was shaken near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 37 minutes ago, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, in the evening on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 9:08 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8.
