Turkey was shaken near Bueyuekcekmece, Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 11 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 13. km beneath the epicenter near Bueyuekcekmece, Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, Turkey, early afternoon on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 3:12 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.9, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.8, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.9.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the
