An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred in the afternoon on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, at 4:06 pm local time near Basco, Batanes, Cagayan Valley, Philippines, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 4.4, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 3.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sabtang (pop. 1,700) located 79 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ivana (pop. 1,400) located 85 km from the
