Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Kingaroy, South Burnett, Queensland, Australia. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Saturday, August 16th, 2025, at 9:49 am local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Cherbourg (pop. 1,300) located 6 miles from the epicenter, and Murgon (pop. 2,400) 9 miles away.
In Wondai (pop. 2,000) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Kingaroy (pop. 10,100) 19 miles away, and Nanango (pop. 3,600) 24 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gympie (pop. 10,800) located 40 miles from the epicenter.
