A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Kalifornsky, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA, was reported only 5 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 23 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, at 6:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kasilof (pop. 550) located 20 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cohoe (pop. 1,400) located 22 miles from the epicenter, Soldotna (pop. 4,500) 22 miles away, Sterling (pop. 5,600)
