An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early afternoon on Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, at 2:29 pm local time near San Severo, Provincia di Foggia, Apulia, Italy, as reported by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 7.40 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.6, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Marina di Lesina (pop. 94) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Sannicandro Garganico (pop. 15,800) 15 km away.
