A shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported after midnight near Santa Monica, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, Philippines.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake hit on Wednesday, October 8th, 2025, at 12:55 am local time at a shallow depth of 24. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Monica (pop. 2,300) located 76 km from the epicenter, Pilar (pop. 2,400) 78 km away, Dapa (pop. 8,800) 89 km away, and Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte (pop. 4,300) 90 km away.
