Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 just reported 45 km southeast of Funchal, Portugal

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred late at night on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at 11:19 pm local time near Funchal, Funchal Municipality, Madeira, Portugal, as reported by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agua de Pena (pop. 2,400) located 36 km from the epicenter, Machico (pop. 12,600) 36 km away, Canico (pop. 23,400) 37 km away, Camacha (pop. 8,000) 39 km away, Santa Maria Maior (pop. 11,800) 41 km

Significant magnitude 6.1 quake hits 15 km north of Mene Grande, Venezuela early evening

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.1 quake in Venezuela near Mene Grande, Baralt Municipality, Zulia, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at 6:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Mene Grande (pop. 60,600) located 15 km from the epicenter, Lagunillas (pop. 44,300) 38 km away, and Ciudad Ojeda (pop. 157,000) 47 km away.
In Tia Juana (pop. 23,700) located 55 km from the epicenter, Cabimas (pop. 291,100) 72 km away, Valera (pop. 244,700) 83 km away, and Maracaibo (pop. 2,225,000) 105 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
