Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Taloqan, Taluqan District, Takhar, Afghanistan. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, at 1:03 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 114. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Farkhar (pop. 10,500) located 64 km from the epicenter, Nahrin (pop. 22,400) 89 km away, Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 94 km away, and Bazarak (pop. 65,000) 98 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Khanabad (pop. 71,500) located 115 km from the epicenter, and Baghlan (pop. 108,400) 128 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.

Hayatabad, Peshawar, Pakistan (263.2 km SSE of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating : Initially it was light or moderate to say the least but then it calmed but at the same time my bed kept vibrating for several minutes and i could tell more prominently because i reside on the first floor of the house. | 2 users found this interesting.  

mirpur (469.6 km SE of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) : Just sitting on couch . heard windows rattling and then went to check on it. suddenly whole house went crazy and starting shaking for like 5 to 6 seconds. | One user found this interesting.  

Lahore (631 km SE of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / rattling, vibrating / 2-5 s : I was staying in front of my computer desk when suddenly I started hearing a light rumble and noticed that a flower vase was vibrating as well. Furniture shook enough to create audible sounds. (reported through our app)
