Just 12 minutes ago, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Frankston East, Frankston, Victoria, Australia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Thursday, August 14th, 2025, at 4:39 am local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Flinders (pop. 830) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Cowes (pop. 4,800) 14 miles away, and Phillip Island (pop. 7,100) 14 miles away. In Frankston East (pop. 34,500, 22 miles away), Ocean Grove (pop. 13,500, 28 miles away), Geelong (pop. 269,000, 39 miles away), Glen Waverly (pop. 42,600, 39 miles away), Melbourne (pop. 4,917,800, 42 miles away), and St Albans (pop. 37,600, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
