A shallow magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Escondido, San Diego County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, October 3rd, 2025, at 2:07 am local time at a shallow depth of 10.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Julian (pop. 1,500) located 13 miles from the epicenter. In Ramona (pop. 20,300, 21 miles away), Escondido (pop. 151,000, 29 miles away), Poway (pop. 50,200, 32 miles away), San Marcos (pop. 92,900, 33 miles away), Palm Desert (pop. 51,900, 35 miles away), Temecula (pop. 110,000, 35 miles away), Santee (pop. 57,800, 36 miles away), and Vista (pop. 100,900, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
