An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred around noon on Thursday, November 27th, 2025, at 12:57 pm local time near Salinas, Monterey County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San Juan Bautista (pop. 2,000) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Prunedale (pop. 17,600) 7 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hollister (pop. 37,500) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Salinas (pop. 157,400) 10 miles away, Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 15 miles
