A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Palmerston North, Palmerston North City, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand, was reported only 10 minutes ago by New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 24.20 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, September 11th, 2025, at 1:44 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pahiatua (pop. 2,800) located 7 km from the epicenter, Mangatainoka (pop. 1,900) 11 km away, Palmerston North (pop. 90,500) 19 km away, Kelvin Grove (pop. 7,200) 20 km away, Ashhurst (pop. 3,200) 21 km away, Levin (pop. 19,800) 44 km away, and Masterton (pop. 29,100) 54 km away.
