An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred early morning on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at 2:48 am local time near Bodrum, Mugla, Turkey, as reported by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 7. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.0, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.0, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.7, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.1, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.9, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt
