WASHINGTON — Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator, Karen S. Evans, announced that President Donald J. Trump made additional disaster assistance available to the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians Tribal Nation to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by Tropical Storm Hilary from August 19-21, 2023.

The President authorized the federal cost-share for FEMA’s Public Assistance program to be increased from 75% to 90%. The major disaster declaration made federal funding available through FEMA’s Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation programs.

Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is currently seeking exceptionally qualified candidates for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position (003755) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise and research interests in precision engineering for advanced manufacturing systems, and an expected start date of August 2026. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: precision mechatronics and controls for machine design and intelligent manufacturing systems, precision metrology for micro/nanoscale structures such as semiconductors, quantum devices, packaging, and bio-interfaces, fast in-situ metrology and inspection techniques with special interest in optical-based approaches for extreme environments (high temperature, high radiation fields, zero gravity, etc.), and AI-enabled metrology, control, and manufacturing for autonomous and sustainable systems.

Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division (TMD) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in China near Mengla, Xishuangbanna Daizu Zizhizhou, Yunnan Sheng, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Monday, December 22nd, 2025, at 11:45 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Mengla (pop. 30,300) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Muang Sing (pop. 23,500) 47 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Muang Xay (pop. 25,000) located 82 km from the epicenter, and Jinghong (pop. 205,500) 113 km away.
