Significant 5.1 quake hits near Bitung, Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia

Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Bitung, Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia. The tremor was recorded early evening on Monday, August 18th, 2025, at 7:05 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 80. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bitung (pop. 137,400) located 73 km from the epicenter, Bitung (pop. 225,100) 76 km away, Tondano (pop. 33,300) 88 km away, Laikit, Laikit II (Dimembe) (pop. 8,000) 93 km away, Tomohon (pop. 27,600) 99 km away, and Manado (pop. 451,900) 104 km away.
